The Armenian foreign ministry said on Friday that Armenia has formally recognized a Palestinian state, becoming the latest nation to do so in defiance of Israel’s opposition. A ministry statement stated that Armenia is in favor of a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and supports a UN resolution calling for an immediate truce in Israel’s battle with Hamas in Gaza.

According to a statement from the ministry, Israel’s foreign ministry called the ambassador of Armenia “for a serious reprimand” after Armenia recognized the state of Palestine. The Palestinian Authority, which is under Israeli military control in the West Bank but enjoys some degree of self-government, applauded Armenia’s move.
