Authorities in Sweetwater reported that a 40-year-old man was taken into custody on Sunday after stabbing another man in the hand outside of a café.
The victim’s arrest report states that shortly after 2:45 a.m., while outside the Rinconcito Café, which is situated at 10930 W. Flagler St., he was approached by Christian Echeverri, who was armed with a knife and wearing a backpack.
According to the arrest report, the victim informed police that Echeverri had been “bothering” him and that when he urged him to stop, Echeverri had started to make “slashing movements” toward him before stabbing him in the right hand.
According to the report, the victim’s phone was then taken by Echeverri, who then ran south on 110th Avenue.
Officers combed the area, according to Sweetwater police, and saw Echeverri appearing to toss something away.
He had the victim’s smartphone on him when he was apprehended, according to the police.
Echeverri defended himself, claiming in the report that the victim had given him the phone and that the victim was the one who had the knife and had attempted to stab him.
According to the police, the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening when they were taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.
“It is important to note that the victim seems to be very old and frail and walks (with) a cane and can barely maintain his balance without a cane,” an officer wrote in the arrest report.
Echeverri was taken into custody on suspicion of aggravated violence and armed robbery.
He was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Monday afternoon, and no bond had been set.
