France’s far-right National Rally (RN) party, led by Marine Le Pen, has secured a significant victory in the first round of the country’s snap parliamentary elections.
According to pollsters, RN won around 34% of the vote, followed by the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) coalition with 29%, and President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Ensemble alliance with 20.5%.
While the result puts RN in a strong position, potentially enabling them to form a government, forces from across the political spectrum have indicated they will collaborate to prevent the far-right party from gaining power in the second round vote on July 7.
