Due to a shoulder ailment, Aryna Sabalenka withdrew from the Wimbledon tennis championships. The withdrawal of the world No. 3 cleared the way for an already open women’s singles draw. The attractive Belarusian, a two-time semifinalist in this competition, had alluded to the possibility that she could not begin the competition during her Saturday pre-championship media appearance.

Aryna Sabalenka, the favorite at Wimbledon, withdrew on Monday due to a shoulder injury.

The two-time Australian Open winner was slated to play American Emina Bektas in the opening round of the grass-court Grand Slam competition on Day 1 at the All England Club, where she was seeded third.

I’m sorry that I will not participate in The Championships this year. Sabalenka said on social media, “I tried everything to get myself ready, but unfortunately, my shoulder is not cooperating.” “Today, I gave it everything I had in practice, but my team informed me that going into the game would worsen matters. I vow that next year, I’ll be back stronger than before since this competition means a lot to me.

At BetMGM Sportsbook, Sabalenka was the favorite to win the Wimbledon women’s doubles title.

Sabalenka, who came second in the All England Club’s last two semifinals, fell in qualifying last week. Thus, Erika Andreeva took her spot in the draw on Monday. Andreeva defeated Bektas 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the second round.

Sabalenka withdrew from the Berlin Ladies Open quarterfinal a little over a week ago during the opening set with a shoulder injury. She described her muscular injury as “extremely frustrating.”

“I can do anything, which is the most aggravating thing. I can hit my groundstrokes; I can practice. I have trouble serving. That irritates me greatly. You don’t seem to be hurt,” Sabalenka remarked. I will lift some weights if you give them to me. However, I will experience suffering if you order me to serve. We performed everything, including an MRI. We had several therapies, a great deal of rehab, and everything.

On Saturday, Sabalenka stated that she could have to withdraw from Wimbledon. However, I still have hopes. Even after enduring various hardships over the last several months, I am optimistic.

The 26-year-old Belarusian, presently ranked third behind Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff, briefly held the top WTA rankings during the previous season.

Sabalenka’s strength is the foundation of her game, especially regarding her serve and huge forehand. It’s a kind of tennis that performs exceptionally well on faster courts, like the grass at Wimbledon and the hard courts at the Australian Open, where she won titles in January and 2023.

Both in 2021 and the previous year, she advanced to the All England Club’s final four. Due to the invasion of Ukraine, all players from Belarus and Russia were prohibited from competing at Wimbledon in 2022, including Sabalenka.

Several players withdrew from the event as it was getting underway, including Sabalenka, who left the bracket on Monday without ever playing a point.

Hours before Ekaterina Alexandrova was scheduled to play Emma Raducanu, the 2021 U.S. Open winner, at Centre Court, the No. 22 seed withdrew due to an undisclosed illness. Renata Zarazua, Alexandrova’s stand-in, fell short against Raducanu 7-6 (0), 6-3.

Similar to Sabalenka, Victoria Azarenka withdrew due to a shoulder issue. She was a two-time Australian Open winner and previous No. 1. Elsa Jacquemot, who took her position, lost 6-3, 6-3 against Sloane Stephens, the 2017 U.S. Open winner.
