NC Sen. Jim Perry resigns. Kinston Republican served in leadership positions

On Tuesday, North Carolina Senator Jim Perry resigned his seat, effective immediately. Perry, a Republican from Lenoir, was appointed to the Senate in 2019 and had risen to a top leadership position, serving as Senate majority whip and co-chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

In December, Perry announced that he would not be seeking reelection, citing a desire to spend more time with his family. His resignation leaves the Republican Party without a veto-proof supermajority in the Senate, although the legislative session is largely over for the year.

A replacement for Perry will be nominated by county-level GOP leadership in Lenoir, Craven, and Beaufort counties, and will serve until the winner of the November election is sworn in. Bob Brinson, the Republican nominee, will face Democratic candidate Charles Dudley in the general election.
