According to a report from ESPN’s Zach Lowe, Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young was a strong contender to be traded this offseason. However, after the team traded Dejounte Murray to the New Orleans Pelicans last month, Young’s market has declined.
With the acquisition of Murray and the No. 1 choice in the draft in Zaccharie Risacher, the Hawks seem ready to build around a youthful core. Young, who is only 25, might have a role in the team’s future as intended. In addition, the Hawks’ first-round picks are under the San Antonio Spurs’ ownership through 2027, so it doesn’t make much sense for them to tank. In a deal with the Spurs, the Hawks might regain control of future draft capital, but Lowe points out that the Spurs haven’t recently expressed interest in acquiring Young.
Furthermore, the Lakers, who were allegedly considering a trade for Young, have shown little willingness to agree to Atlanta’s high demands for the three-time All-Star. This has made the market in Young as “as chilly as it’s ever been,” according to Lowe.
Young’s offence is strong enough to keep the Hawks in the hunt for an East playoff berth and would improve any opposing team he might eventually join.
Young made his third All-Star squad in six seasons last year, averaging 25.7 points and 10.8 assists in 54 games while shooting 43.0% from the field and 37.3% from three.
