Kentucky motel ordered to pay $2 million after guest dies from 150-degree shower
A Kentucky man, 76 years old, tragically suffered severe burns leading to his death, resulting in a legal battle that culminated in his family being awarded over $2 million. The lawsuit detailed how Alex Chronis, while staying at the Econo Lodge in Erlanger, Kentucky, encountered scorching water temperatures exceeding 150 degrees Fahrenheit during a fatal shower incident on November 18, 2021.
Chronis endured excruciating second- and third-degree burns, necessitating skin grafting due to the scalding shower water. Despite undergoing months of hospitalization, he succumbed to his injuries on June 19, 2022. With no immediate family, his niece initiated legal action against the motel on his behalf, seeking justice for the harrowing ordeal he endured.
Expert testimonies confirmed the dangerously high water temperature, with photographic evidence revealing the extent of Chronis’ injuries. The subsequent court ruling on July 11 awarded his estate substantial compensation, including coverage for medical and funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and punitive damages. The defense’s attempt to dispute the events, including questioning Chronis’ stay at the motel, encountered legal challenges as the case proceeded to a critical phase with a pending appeal.
