According to the Pembroke Pines (Fla.) Police Department (via The Athletic), Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor was arrested in Florida on Wednesday on a felony warrant for neglecting to disclose his residence change as a registered sex offender.
After turning himself up to the Broward Sheriff’s Office in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, the former linebacker was freed on bond. According to TMZ, Taylor brought himself in on Wednesday about five o’clock in the local time zone. He was thereafter detained for the following few hours until being freed at roughly three in the morning on Thursday.
Taylor, 65, was placed in an almost comparable circumstance when he was also taken into custody in Florida in December of 2021. Taylor’s lawyer, Mark Eiglarsh, described the circumstances as a “misunderstanding” and stated that his client will be entering a not guilty plea to the allegations.
“As with the previous incident involving the same allegations, Mr. Taylor did not knowingly commit any criminal offense. This situation is a significant misunderstanding,” Eiglarsh told The Athletic. “We are confident that, once the prosecutors review the exculpatory evidence demonstrating Mr. Taylor’s innocence, he will once again achieve a favorable outcome.”
More than ten years had passed since Taylor entered a guilty plea to charges of sexual misbehavior and using a prostitute, making him a registered sex offender. This arrest occurs after that. He must thus notify the authorities of any new residences. Taylor eventually entered a plea of not guilty to a lesser charge of residency restriction for those convicted of such acts in his 2021 case.
Taylor, who is regarded by many as the best defensive player in NFL history, has had other moments throughout his career. He was accused of fleeing the scene of an accident in 2009. He entered a guilty plea to driving while intoxicated in 2017.
