In a bid to probe into the Capitol Hill attack, Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries unveiled a specialized committee in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The plan, expected to be ratified by a House vote later this week, seeks to rectify the security lapses that led to the shooting incident at Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania on July 13. The resolution calls for a 13-member task force with members from both parties, whereby the task force shall have powers to issue subpoenas to enable it to gather facts within the shortest time possible, recommend appropriate action, and ensure that future incidents of such nature are prevented.

“The security lapses that led to an assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life are mind blowing,” Johnson and Jeffries said in a joint press statement. They stressed the importance of the task force’s mission to conduct a thorough probe into the incident and identify any changes required.

The identities of the members of the task force have not been disclosed yet, but there are rumors regarding the possible appointments, especially with the congressional leaders’ closed-door discussions. The formation of the task force is happening against the backdrop of several investigations by various committees in the US House of Representatives, such as the House Oversight Committee and the House Homeland Security Committee.

Recently, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle testified before the House Oversight Committee and came under fire from both Democrats and Republicans who demanded her resignation. The Homeland Security Committee has sent out letters to request documents and has set up hearings to investigate the security failure at Trump’s rally with the help of Chair Mark Green.

FBI Director Christopher Wray is also expected to appear before the House Judiciary Committee later this week, which also points to the exhaustive investigation of the incident.

Johnson had earlier stated his desire to set up a specific team to coordinate the House’s broad probe into the shooting. Based on the meeting with Jeffries, the formation of the task force is a clear indication that there is a need for a special approach to dealing with some of the major security vulnerabilities.

The formation of the task force can be considered the turning point in congressional actions aimed at revealing the circumstances of the attempted assassination and strengthening the protection of public personalities.

While the House is set to vote on the resolution that will create the task force, the focus shifts to the hearings and investigations that are expected to give details on the circumstances that led to the shooting and the actions taken by the security forces.

The task force’s work is expected to commence promptly upon its formal establishment, signaling a determined effort by Congress to uphold security standards and safeguard against future threats to public officials.
