After their court hearings on Thursday, the three youths accused in the death of Ohio mother Alexa Stakely, who was hit while attempting to stop her car from being stolen while her 6-year-old son was inside, will still be detained.
Murder charges have been brought against the three suspects, Gerald Dowling, 19, and two 16-year-olds. The two 16-year-olds who are accused in Franklin County Juvenile Court may face adult charges if the judge determines there is reasonable suspicion that they committed the offense. Since the two kids have not been charged as adults, The Columbus Dispatch, a part of the USA TODAY Network, is not naming them.
One of the 16-year-olds, who was accompanied by his parents, turned himself in at Columbus police headquarters on Wednesday and consented to speak with detectives, according to authorities. Later, he said cops, he and the other two acquaintances were searching around 1:30 a.m. on July 11 for a car to steal when they spotted Stakely’s Honda.
According to Columbus police, the other 16-year-old was apprehended on Wednesday afternoon and told investigators that he was there while Stakely’s car was being attempted to be stolen. Dowling surrendered on Wednesday evening.
