Who Is Henry VIII’s Last Wife?

Catherine Parr was born around 1512 to Sir Thomas Parr, a Gloucestershire gentleman, and his wife, Maud Greene. Born in the Renaissance period, Catherine was well-educated and read quite a lot. She was able to speak several languages, such as French, Italian, and Latin, and this was rare for women of her generation.

First Marriage

In 1529 Catherine first married Edward Borough in 1529. But because of his unfortunate death, she became a widow at a young age.

Second Marriage

In 1543, Catherine then married Thomas Seymour, the brother of Jane Seymour, Henry’s third wife. This marriage was short-lived, as Thomas died in 1549.

Catherine Parr became the sixth wife of Henry VIII on July 12, 1543. Henry was 52 years old and needed a wife to look after him and perform domestic chores in the house.

Catherine was 31 years old and she turned out to be a smart and good partner.

Political Influence

Catherine was a very political woman who was instrumental in the Reformation process in England. She was a Protestant, and as such, she supported the translation of the Bible into English and was in support of women’s education which was rare in her era.

Marriage To Thomas Seymour

Catherine Parr, after the death of Henry VIII in January 1547, married Thomas Seymour in July of the same year. Nevertheless, this marriage was not a happy one and was short-lived as it was full of complications and personal issues.

Tragic Death

Catherine got pregnant soon after her marriage to Seymour and died on September 5, 1548, after giving birth to a daughter, Mary Seymour. Her death was premature, and it deprived the society of a promising and influential personality.
