Joni Trammell was born on July 19, 1960, in Greenville, South Carolina. Marcus Lamb, born in 1957, was a visiting preacher at Joni’s home church, the Tremont Avenue Church of God.

Joni dated Marcus after they met when she was attending a revival in which the minister was Marcus.

Joni met Marcus in 1974, and they got married in 1982; for the first few years of their married life, they were itinerant evangelists, which entailed going around several churches in the southeastern United States.

In December 1984, they moved to Montgomery, Alabama, where they bought a full-power television station. This was about the time they began their evangelism through media since they began teaching the Bible through broadcast television.
