According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a Peruvian gang leader who is wanted for 23 murders in his native country was taken into custody on Thursday.
A person familiar with the operation said that Gianfranco Torres-Navarro was taken into custody in Endicott, New York, as part of a “targeted operation.” Local officials claim that Torres-Navarro is the accused leader of the Peruvian gang known as “Los Killers.”
“We won’t allow New York to be a safe haven for dangerous noncitizens,” stated Thomas P. Brophy, Director of Enforcement and Removal Operations Buffalo Field Office. “Gianfranco Torres-Navarro poses a significant threat to our communities.” “Well done by our ERO Buffalo officers who brought this individual into custody.”
Torres-Navarro, 38, entered the United States on May 16 near Roma, Texas, and investigators learned a month ago that he was sought in Peru for murder. He is being housed in a federal correctional facility in Batavia, New York. As of the time of publication, Torres-Navarro had no attorney listed.
