George Clooney’s foundation has been banned by Russia for its ‘extensive work aimed at discrediting Russia’

The US movie actor George Clooney and his human rights attorney wife Amal founded a charity, but Russia has outlawed it, the country’s prosecutor general announced on Monday. It released a statement saying, “The Clooney Foundation for Justice’s activities are deemed undesirable on our country’s territory.”

The group “conducts extensive work aimed at discrediting Russia and actively supports members of banned terrorist and extremist groups as well as false patriots.” “These ‘warriors for justice’ advance criminal probes against the highest level Russian authorities under the cover of humanitarian ideas,” the statement headlined “The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office Appreciates Hollywood Activists’ Acting Talent” stated.

Following Moscow’s deployment of troops into Ukraine in February 2022, the Russian government has increased opposition suppression to unprecedented heights. A lawsuit against Russia for allegedly violating the human rights of Ukrainians killed in a 2022 missile strike on Vinnytsia was submitted with the UN Human Rights Committee in July by the Clooney Foundation and a number of other non-governmental organizations.

Early in August, Russia’s prosecutor general barred German pro-democracy foundation Konrad Adenauer for being “undesirable,” and in July, he did the same for the news source Moscow Times. Russians who work for, fund, or interact with these organizations may face legal repercussions due to their “undesirable” status, which compels them to close.
