Richard Simmons’ death was deemed accidental, as confirmed by his brother, Lenny Simmons, in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE.

On August 21, the LA Coroner’s office informed Lenny that Richard’s passing resulted from complications related to recent falls, with heart disease as a contributing factor. The toxicology report was clear, showing only prescribed medications. The Simmons family expressed gratitude for the love and support they’ve received during this difficult time, according to their spokesperson, Tom Estey.

The fitness icon Richard Simmons was discovered by his longtime housekeeper on July 13, a day after celebrating his 76th birthday, as confirmed by his publicist, Tom Estey, to PEOPLE. While the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed there was no foul play, the cause of death was initially deferred pending further tests.

Earlier reports indicated that Simmons had fallen at home on July 12 after feeling dizzy. He had reportedly mentioned to his housekeeper that he might seek medical care the following day if his condition persisted.
