The body of British software entrepreneur Mike Lynch has been recovered from the submerged luxury boat that crashed off the coast of Sicily earlier this week, according to an Italian government official. Lynch’s family and friends were celebrating his recent acquittal in a high-profile trial. Prior to Monday, August 19, when the Bayesian entered the water early, according to report five deaths had been discovered in the days that after what the authorities called a “violent storm.”
Massimo Mariani, a representative of the Italian interior ministry, verified to Reuters that Lynch’s daughter Hannah is still missing, although Lynch herself was one of the victims who was discovered. Mike Lynch, who was cleared of fraud, was thrilled but found it difficult to accept the new reality prior to the yacht sinking.
The Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello on August 19, according to the Italian Coast Guard, however it’s still unknown why the ship sank so swiftly. Twelve passengers and ten crew members made up the twenty-two people on board, according to the coast guard. Soon, fifteen of them—including Lynch’s spouse, Angela Bacares—were saved, while Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef, was discovered dead not far away.
Six persons were listed as missing: Christopher Morvillo, a lawyer based in New York City, and his wife Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy; and Lynch and his daughter Hannah. Lynch, dubbed Britain’s “Bill Gates,” was acquitted in June of financial fraud charges stemming from his 2011 $11 billion sale of Autonomy, his software company, to Hewlett Packard. A source close to the survivors had earlier told PEOPLE that the passengers were rejoicing. The source stated, “He took his closest friends and colleagues on the trip because of this.”
