Elon Musk has endorsed a controversial measure in California that attempts to control artificial intelligence (AI) models. This decision has generated a great deal of discussion. Senate Bill 1047, introduced by Democratic state senator Scott Wiener, would mandate safety testing of large-scale AI models in order to guard against possible abuses such the creation of biological weapons.

In a post on X on Monday, Musk expressed his support for the law, saying that it was a “tough call” that would enrage some. Still, he thinks the bill ought to be approved. The plan needs to pass the Legislature by the end of the week in order to be forwarded to Governor Gavin Newsom for approval, so Musk’s support is important.

Musk wrote: “I have been an advocate for AI regulation for more than 20 years, just as we regulate any product or technology that is a potential risk to the public.” His backing demonstrates how concerned he remains about the possible hazards of cutting-edge AI technology. Proposed laws have drawn harsh condemnation from influential tech companies and individuals. Among those who have claimed that the bill’s restrictions are ambiguous and may impede the development of open-sourced AI models are Marc Andreesen and OpenAI. Opponents fear that the bill will hinder innovation and put needless obstacles in the way of internet companies.

Senator Wiener, the bill’s author, maintains that strict laws are required to avert disastrous consequences in spite of the criticism. The bill seeks to allay concerns that malicious actors might use AI to develop harmful technology. Musk’s stance on AI has clearly changed as a result of his support for the bill. Despite his earlier calls for a halt to the creation of potent new AI systems, he has recently come around to generative AI technology. His business, X, just released a service called Grok that lets users create and share computer-generated graphics using text prompts. Concerns regarding the dissemination of false information and deepfakes on social media platforms have been raised by this development.

Because of his stance, Musk is also at odds with a number of Democrats in Congress who have opposed the measure, including as Reps. Ro Khanna, Zoe Lofgren, and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Their critiques highlight how convoluted and frequently divisive the discussion surrounding AI legislation is.

There is still uncertainty over the destiny of Senate Bill 1047 as the deadline draws near. Musk’s support for the measure may have an impact on its course, but it also highlights the stark differences in opinion among lawmakers and the tech world over how best to regulate artificial intelligence.
