Florida: Two young women, Christie Parisien, 20, and Jaslyn Smith, 19, have been sentenced to 25 years in prison for their involvement in the brutal murder of 18-year-old Dwight “DJ” Grant, a crime that stemmed from a romantic rivalry. The sentencing took place on Thursday, marking a significant development in a case that has shocked the Broward County, Florida, community. The lead defendant, Andre Clements, 17 at the time of the crime, is set to face trial soon.
Luring the Victim to His Death
According to authorities, the murder was a meticulously planned attack, fueled by jealousy and revenge. Parisien, then 17, was the one who initiated the deadly plot by luring Grant to a stairwell in their apartment complex. Once Grant arrived, he was ambushed by Parisien, Smith, and Clements, who attacked him relentlessly for 31 minutes. The details of the attack are horrifying; Clements allegedly told Grant, “You know I have to kill you now,” before stabbing him in the neck with a sword. Grant, gravely injured, pleaded for his life to be ended, and Clements allegedly complied, delivering a fatal stab to the chest.
The three teenagers then carried Grant’s body and callously dumped it over a railing, just 30 feet from his apartment. The brutal nature of the crime has left the community reeling, with neighbors expressing their shock and disbelief. “It’s horrifying, and he was such a good child,” a neighbor told Fox Miami affiliate WSVN in 2021. “His mother loved him. A Mother’s Grief and the Upcoming Trial
The motive behind the murder was rooted in a twisted love triangle. Clements, now 20, was reportedly enraged after learning that Grant had slept with his ex-girlfriend. In a bid for revenge, he recruited Parisien and Smith to assist in the gruesome act. The young women initially faced charges of first-degree murder but ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and conspiracy to commit murder. This plea deal reduced their potential sentences, but they will still spend 25 years behind bars.
During the sentencing, Grant’s mother, Madge Emile, delivered a heart-wrenching statement in court, expressing the profound loss she feels every day. “I’ll never have a grandchild,” Emile said, according to WSVN. “All I could think of is that day, the way my son is. I will never see him grow up, how old he would be. We always had this tradition that, when we were going to bed, he would say, ‘Good night, Mom.’ I would say, ‘Good night, see you in the morning, I love you.’ I’ll never hear my son say he loves me.”
As Parisien and Smith begin their lengthy prison sentences, attention now turns to Clements, who faces charges of first-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence, and conspiracy to murder in the first degree.
