Man accused of shooting death of a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnast got arrested

According to police, a guy has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting death ofwho won a national championship close to campus. After an incident at an apartment near the university late on Friday night, Kara Welsh, 21, was shot by the suspect, who Whitewater police said was simply a 23-year-old guy who knew the victim.

Welsh passed away on Saturday, according to a message sent by university chancellor Corey King to staff, instructors, and students. “We are aware that our close-knit university community is devastated by the news of Kara’s passing,” King stated. “We are all called upon at this time to support one another, process, and grieve.”

According to a statement from the police, the suspect was brought to the Walworth County Jail and charged with first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety while carrying a weapon, and disorderly conduct while carrying a weapon. It was unknown whether he was still in jail or if he had hired legal representation because his name has not been made public. An inquiry for additional details on Sunday night was not answered by Whitewater police.

A 23-year-old man was present when police arrived to a report of a gunshot victim on Friday, according to an earlier statement from the police department. Police reported that a woman who was later identified as Welsh had been shot several times and was dead when they arrived. An inquiry revealed that, before to the shooting, there had been a confrontation between two peoples. The homicide happened at a house that was classified as off-campus accommodation on a university website, in the 100 block of Whitewater Street, around one mile east of the school’s main campus.
