Colorado: Sergio Ferrer, 36, has been arrested and is now facing charges for the murder of Paul Peavey, a 57-year-old Doberman pinscher breeder from Colorado. Initially taken into custody in Nebraska on unrelated weapons charges, Ferrer was later extradited to Clear Creek, Colorado, where he now awaits trial for the alleged murder. The case has drawn significant attention, particularly due to the mysterious circumstances surrounding Peavey’s disappearance and the theft of several puppies from his property.
The Disappearance and Grim Discovery
Paul Peavey was last seen alive on August 19 and reported missing by concerned friends on August 21. On August 22, deputies checked Peavey’s camper, only to find the door open and no sign of him. It wasn’t until August 24 that a search party comprised of Peavey’s friends made the grim discovery. They found his body downhill from his camper, confirming their worst fears. According to the affidavit obtained by Denver’s ABC affiliate KMGH, up to 10 Doberman pinscher puppies were missing from Peavey’s property, believed to have been sold on social media. In addition to the puppies, other valuable items, including cash, metal detecting equipment, and jewelry, were also reported missing. These missing items would later play a crucial role in linking Ferrer to the crime.
Shifting Stories and Key Evidence
Ferrer’s involvement came to light after members of the search party reported seeing his daughter trying to sell the missing puppies on Facebook. When they attempted to call Peavey’s phone, the person who answered faked an accent but was suspected to be Ferrer. This raised red flags and put Ferrer on the radar of law enforcement.
During a search of Ferrer’s residence, investigators found several items matching those reported missing from Peavey’s camper, including jewelry, metal detectors, and other belongings. When interviewed by agents from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Ferrer’s story continually shifted. He provided inconsistent accounts about buying a puppy from Peavey, the price of the puppy, and the number of times he had visited the camper—ranging from never to five times. His most damning statement came when he alleged that Peavey was involved with “the cartel” and had tried to kill him over “missing drugs,” forcing Ferrer to shoot him in self-defense.
Despite his claim of self-defense, Ferrer struggled to explain how Peavey’s body ended up downhill from the trailer. Eventually, he admitted to returning to the scene the next day and moving the body to a location where it would be found, claiming he did so “out of respect.” Ferrer also confessed to taking the puppies that night, later going to Denver to give them away because he didn’t have the time to sell them.
Puppies Still Missing as Investigation Continues
As of Friday, authorities were still searching for the missing puppies. The ongoing investigation seeks to uncover the full extent of Ferrer’s involvement in Peavey’s death and whether others may have played a role. Ferrer remains in custody, and his trial will likely reveal more details about this tragic case, which has left a community in mourning and searching for justice.
