Ricky Pearsall, a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery in the Union Square area of downtown San Francisco on Saturday. The 23-year-old is currently in serious but stable condition. Authorities have taken the suspect into custody, and both individuals received medical attention following the incident.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed acknowledged the shooting on social media, stating, “My thoughts are with Ricky and his family at this time,” via X (formerly Twitter). The attack occurred near Geary Street and Grant Avenue, a well-trafficked area.

San Francisco police reported that Pearsall was attacked during a robbery attempt, resulting in injuries to both him and the suspect. They were subsequently transported to a local hospital. San Francisco Police Chief William Scott also addressed the incident on social media, condemning the violence: “This kind of violence has no place in our city and will never be tolerated.”

The 49ers issued a statement regarding Pearsall’s condition, confirming that he suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. “We ask that you please respect his privacy at this time,” the team’s statement read, as quoted by AP. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family.” Pearsall, the 49ers’ first-round pick in the NFL Draft this past April, was selected 31st overall. Although he has been dealing with hamstring and shoulder injuries since joining the team, he recently returned to practice in a noncontact jersey as he recovered from his shoulder injury.

Pearsall’s football journey began at Arizona State University before he transferred to the University of Florida for his final two seasons. Last year, he had a standout season with the Florida Gators, recording 65 catches for 965 yards and four touchdowns. He finished his college career with 159 receptions for 2,420 yards and 14 touchdowns.

The 49ers had high hopes for Pearsall’s contributions as a rookie, particularly as a backup to starters Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel. The team and fans are now closely monitoring his recovery following this unexpected and violent incident.
