California: A 21-year-old man, Christopher Ray Schmittel, has been sentenced to 32 years in prison following a deadly car crash that claimed the lives of two friends and left two others severely injured. The crash, fueled by alcohol and drugs, occurred on April 25, 2022, on a Southern California beach. Schmittel was convicted of two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and multiple other charges related to his reckless driving.
The Fatal Incident
On the night of the crash, Schmittel was driving a 2020 Subaru WRX at dangerously high speeds, reaching nearly 140 mph. The incident began on California State Route 74, also known as Ortega Highway, and continued onto U.S. Interstate 5, crossing through multiple counties. Under the influence of alcohol, marijuana, Xanax, and mushrooms, Schmittel lost control of the vehicle, which eventually crashed through a metal guardrail at Torrey Pines State Beach in San Diego. The car plunged 20 to 25 feet onto the beach below, rolling over and ejecting two passengers, 19-year-olds Joshua Manzanares and Johnny Punzalan, who both died at the scene. Schmittel and two other passengers survived but sustained serious injuries.
The Court’s Verdict
In June, a jury of seven men and five women deliberated for two and a half days before finding Schmittel guilty on all charges. Although they had the option to convict him on lesser manslaughter charges, the jury chose to convict him on the more severe counts of second-degree murder. San Diego Superior Court Judge Lisa Rodriguez sentenced Schmittel to 32 years in prison, with 15 years for each murder count to be served consecutively and an additional two years for the injuries caused in the crash. The judge cited Schmittel’s extreme recklessness and disregard for human life as the basis for the harsh sentence, rejecting the defense’s plea for leniency based on Schmittel’s age and lack of prior criminal history.
Heartfelt Responses from the Victims’ Families
The sentencing hearing was an emotional event, with family members of the victims expressing their grief and anger. One of Manzanares’ sisters addressed Schmittel directly, condemning his reckless behavior and the betrayal of his friends’ trust. Another sister spoke to her deceased brother, expressing how much he is missed and how he can now travel the world in spirit. Punzalan’s twin brother shared the pain of losing his sibling, lamenting the void left in his life.
Schmittel apologized during the hearing, acknowledging the gravity of his actions and the irreversible loss suffered by the victims’ families. Despite his remorse, the court’s decision reflects the seriousness of his crimes and the devastating consequences of his reckless behavior.
