Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn stated that a former assistant to New York Governor Kathy Hochul was taken into custody today and accused of working as an unidentified Chinese agent. For a year, Linda Sun was Ms. Hochul’s deputy chief of staff. The 41-year-old is also charged with conspiracies involving money laundering, alien smuggling, and visa fraud.

It is said that during her tenure in the state government, Ms. Sun attempted to arrange the visit of a senior state official from New York to China and prevented representatives of the Taiwanese government from meeting with officials.

“In return for these and other actions, Ms Sun received substantial economic and other benefits from representatives of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) government and the Chinese Communist Party,” the US Attorney’s Office. Chris Hu, her spouse, is also in custody. Prosecutors claimed that Mr. Hu’s transactions totaling millions of dollars were made possible by the Chinese government while he conducted business there.

Prosecutors said that Ms. Sun also got a number of presents, including salted ducks in the Nanjing style made by the chef of a Chinese government figure. According to the US Attorney’s Office, Ms. Sun and Mr. Hu used the money they made from their scam to launder it in order to buy a $2.1 million condo in Hawaii, a $4.1 million property in New York, and a number of high-end cars, including a 2024 Ferrari.
