The Disappearance and Search Efforts

Carol Flaz was last seen around 9 a.m. on Saturday at her apartment on 590 Broadway. According to friends, she received a phone call, stepped out to throw away a bag of trash, and never returned. Her sudden disappearance prompted her son to call for help, launching an intense search effort led by Essex County authorities.

Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker described the search for Flaz as a “full-court press” involving digital forensics, aerial surveillance by a Massachusetts State Police aircraft, and collaboration among several agencies. The search extended to various locations, but it wasn’t until Tuesday evening that investigators were led to a wooded area near Winnekenni Castle beside Kenoza Lake in Haverhill.

Tragic Discovery and Arrest

Tragically, the search concluded with the discovery of Carol Flaz’s body in the wooded area near the lake. A Massachusetts State Police K-9 unit located her remains, bringing a heartbreaking end to the four-day search. Lawrence Mayor Brian DePena expressed the city’s sorrow, saying, “It’s a tough day for the city of Lawrence.”

Following the discovery, 35-year-old Christian Montero, a resident of the same apartment building as Flaz, was arrested. Initially charged with witness intimidation and misleading the investigation, authorities expect these charges to be upgraded to murder pending the results of a medical examination. Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker indicated that more details would emerge as the investigation continues.

Community Mourns and Awaits Justice

The tragic death of Carol Flaz has left the Lawrence community in mourning. Acting Chief of Police Melix Bonilla offered condolences to the Flaz family, stating, “On behalf of the entire Lawrence Police Department, we want to offer our condolences to the family. We met with them a few minutes ago.”
