Woman’s Body Discovered Under Fire Pit After Man Tells People He Buried ‘Something’: Cops
South Carolina: Police have arrested 54-year-old Sheridan Dirk Fogle in connection with the murder of his girlfriend, 51-year-old Penni Whiteside, whose remains were discovered buried under a firepit in the backyard of Fogle’s home. The grim discovery was made over a year after Whiteside was reported missing, bringing a tragic end to the search for her and raising chilling questions about what occurred in the months leading up to her death.
A Disturbing Timeline of Events
Penni Whiteside had been living with Fogle in Myrtle Beach when she was last seen at the start of 2022. It wasn’t until May 11, 2022, that her brother reported her missing, concerned that he had not seen or heard from her in several months. During the investigation, neighbors recounted to police that Fogle had become increasingly “territorial” about a specific area in his backyard, where he had reportedly mentioned burying “something.”
The situation took a turn when, on June 12 of this year, police obtained a search warrant for Fogle’s property. Officers excavated the firepit area in the backyard, uncovering a wooden box containing human remains. The remains were later identified as those of Penni Whiteside. Authorities have not yet released the cause of death, but the discovery was enough to charge Fogle with murder. He was arrested on Thursday and is currently being held without bond at the Horry County Jail.
A History of Violence
The murder charge against Fogle comes after a history of domestic violence incidents involving Whiteside. In November 2021, just a few months before Whiteside’s disappearance, police responded to a domestic violence call at the couple’s apartment. Fogle had allegedly punched Whiteside in the chest, causing her to fall. Despite this violent incident, Fogle continued to live with Whiteside, and about a month later, he reportedly stole her credit and debit cards. Neighbors expressed shock and disbelief at the revelation of the crime. “I think it’s bizarre,” said resident Nikolai Zaitsev. “You have kids playing at the park here every day, and birthday parties, weddings, etc., that happen here. And I’m sure nobody around here knew what was going on.”
Awaiting Justice
Fogle’s arrest marks a significant development in a case that has left the community of Myrtle Beach reeling. The police have described the murder as a “tragic loss of life and a senseless crime of violence,” urging the public to keep the victim’s family and friends in their thoughts during this difficult time.
Fogle is scheduled to appear in court on December 13, where the details of the case will likely be further examined. As the investigation continues, the community remains in shock over the crime that occurred in their midst, hidden beneath the surface until a careful investigation brings the truth to light.
