Man arrested after he’s accused of killing 81 animals in 3-hour span
A man was arrested after allegedly “randomly shooting” and killing 81 animals within a three-hour period, according to California authorities. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving several 911 calls about gunfire at around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 3.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they continued to hear gunshots, prompting them to issue a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding area. Due to the darkness and dense vegetation, it was difficult for deputies to locate the shooter.
Using a drone, authorities eventually spotted a suspect, identified as 39-year-old Vicente Joseph Arroyo, along with a crashed vehicle in a nearby vineyard. Members of the sheriff’s office S.W.A.T. team approached Arroyo and took him into custody. Arroyo reportedly lived on the property where the animals were kept in various cages and enclosures, according to Commander Andres Rosas of the sheriff’s office.
Upon searching the area, deputies discovered that Arroyo had killed 81 animals, including miniature horses, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, ducks, and various birds. Multiple firearms, as well as loaded and empty magazines, were recovered at the scene.
Arroyo was booked into jail on several charges, including willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, cruelty to animals, illegal possession of an assault weapon, and making criminal threats.
