A Los Angeles-area high school student who was recently injured during a football game has tragically passed away, according to a letter from the principal of South East High School. The student, who was hurt during a junior varsity game against Maywood Center for Enriched Studies on August 23, was not publicly identified by the school or the Los Angeles Unified School District. Principal Eric Jaimes expressed deep sorrow in his message to the community, offering condolences and requesting privacy for those affected during this difficult time.

The incident occurred when the student tackled another player on the sidelines, requiring immediate medical assistance. Despite the presence of two medical staff members who attended to the injured student, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

In his letter, Principal Jaimes emphasized the availability of crisis counselors for students needing support, noting that the loss deeply impacts the entire school community. The Los Angeles Unified School District adheres to a policy that mandates the presence of at least one medical professional at all football games, a precaution that was in place during the tragic event.

This incident highlights the ongoing concerns around the safety of youth football. According to the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research, 16 football players across various levels, including high school, died last year, with most of the fatalities being directly or indirectly related to football activities.
