LAUDERHILL: Authorities say a 12-year-old girl has been accused of threatening multiple Broward County schools online. According to Carey Codd, a BSO spokesperson, the teenager was taken into custody late on Monday night after the Broward Sheriff’s Office learned of threats made on social media against schools in Lauderhill, Lauderdale Lakes, Fort Lauderdale, and Sunrise. Ryan Reardon, the principal of Lauderhill 6-12 STEM-MED Magnet School, sent a memo to parents on Tuesday morning regarding the threat.
Student Code Of Conduct
The District was notified last night of an untrustworthy threat against the school. Reardon added, “Law enforcement responded right away and was able to track down the post creator on social media. “The offending party now faces criminal charges and severe penalties in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.” The teenager confessed and claimed the threats were nothing but a joke when officers approached her, according to Codd. Despite not being able to identify her, deputies said she lived in Lauderhill.
Threats Are Serious & Can Be Life-Changing
Her charges include making written threats to kill or carry out a mass shooting and using a two-way communication device without authorization after being brought to the Juvenile Assessment Center, Codd continued. Dr. Howard Hepburn, the Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, discussed the recent threats and emphasized to parents the significance of teaching their kids the gravity of making such threats during a press conference on Tuesday morning. Hepburn remarked, “I’m still puzzled that students aren’t getting the message.” “I hope parents are dealing with these kinds of conversations with their kids, telling them that threats are serious and can alter the course of their lives.”
