Retired FBI agent haunted by Asha Degree case
A retired FBI supervisor recently spoke with Channel 9 about his ongoing distress 24 years after the disappearance of Asha Degree in Cleveland County. The case has gained renewed attention following a recent search and the discovery of a possible clue.
Rick Schaffer, a retired FBI agent with 38 years of law enforcement experience, described the Asha Degree case as the most haunting of his career. “Not a single case haunts me like this one,” Schaffer said, noting that he still carries her photograph.
The FBI became involved the day after 9-year-old Asha vanished on February 14, 2000. Schaffer remembered Asha’s bright eyes and described her as a “wonderful, good-hearted child.” Recently, the FBI, SBI, and Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search near Cherryville Road in Shelby, where they seized a green car resembling one seen in witness reports.
Schaffer emphasized the importance of the car seizure, suggesting it might provide crucial physical evidence. “If they seized the car, it’s for physical evidence, and they will thoroughly examine it for any trace evidence that could have been there for years,” he said.
