TWO RIVERS, Wis. (AP) — On Friday, police confirmed that skeletal remains found by a hunter in northeastern Wisconsin belonged to 3-year-old Elijah Vue, who had been missing since February. Elijah was last seen at the home of his mother’s boyfriend in Two Rivers, a city located about 30 miles southeast of Green Bay.
The hunter, who was preparing his property for deer season, discovered the remains on September 7 in the town of Two Rivers. Forensic experts at the state crime lab identified the remains as Elijah’s. Two Rivers Police Chief Benjamin Meinnert expressed sorrow over the outcome, stating, “This is not the outcome that we hoped for. The family is devastated. We are devastated. The community is devastated.”
Elijah’s mother, Katrina Baur, 31, from Wisconsin Dells, was charged in February with one felony count of being a party to child neglect and two misdemeanor counts of resisting or obstructing an officer. She has pleaded not guilty. Her boyfriend, Jesse Vang, 39, from Two Rivers, faced a felony charge of being a party to child neglect on the same day and also pleaded not guilty.
According to the criminal complaint, Baur had left Elijah with Vang on February 12, intending for him to “teach the boy to be a man.” Vang reported Elijah missing on February 20, claiming the boy had disappeared while he was napping. The remains were found approximately 3 miles from where Elijah was last seen.
The investigation into Elijah’s death is ongoing. Baur’s attorney, Amber Gratz, did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and Vang’s attorney, Timothy Hogan, could not be reached.
