Mum died three days after ‘traumatic’ operation at Good Hope Hospital
A grieving son has expressed his heartbreak over the tragic death of his mother, Jessica Bonner, just three days after she underwent a hysterectomy. Corey Wilson shared that he never imagined his mother wouldn’t return home after her surgery. Jessica, a mother of two from Edgbaston, was admitted to Good Hope Hospital on October 5, 2023, to have her womb and ovaries removed to treat pelvic pain and fibroids.
After the procedure, Jessica showed signs of infection, including a high temperature and elevated heart rate, but these concerns were not escalated to the ward consultant or surgeon, as revealed during an inquest at Birmingham and Solihull Coroner’s Court. Despite complaining of severe abdominal pain, Jessica wasn’t physically examined until more than seven hours later, by which time her abdomen had swollen, suggesting a bowel perforation. Although an urgent CT scan was ordered, her condition had deteriorated to the point where she could not be safely transferred.
Jessica underwent surgery in the early hours of October 8 and was moved to the intensive care unit. Tragically, she suffered two cardiac arrests and multi-organ failure, and passed away later that morning. She is survived by her partner, Jason Large, and her two adult sons, Corey and Shakil Stevens.
The inquest revealed that a post-mortem examination confirmed Jessica died from sepsis caused by a bowel perforation sustained during her hysterectomy. The coroner concluded that had her symptoms been addressed earlier, the bowel injury could have been detected and treated in time to potentially save her life.
