MANHATTAN: The district attorney announced on Tuesday that the personal assistant who was found guilty of killing and dismembering his former boss, a software entrepreneur, after robbing him of approximately US$400,000, has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison.

In June, Tyrese Haspil, 25, was convicted guilty of murder, grand larceny, and other offenses related to the demise of his former employer, Fahim Saleh, in 2020. Assisting Saleh in his business endeavors, which included starting a motorcycle ride-hailing service in Nigeria, Haspil was employed, according to the prosecution, but he soon started embezzling money from Saleh’s companies.

Avoiding Charges

A year after leaving his position, Haspil kept stealing money, even after Saleh found out and allowed Haspil to pay him back over a two-year period to avoid facing charges.

Prosecutors alleged that Haspil killed Saleh because he was afraid his former boss would find out that he was still stealing from his enterprises. When Saleh’s apartment doors opened on July 13, 2020, Haspil, disguised as a man in a black suit, followed him into the elevator of his opulent Manhattan building and used a taser to shock him in the back.

According to investigators, Haspil fatally stabbed Saleh after he fell to the ground. The following day, Haspil went back to the flat to use an electric saw to dismember the body, but when the saw’s battery expired, he had to go buy a charger. Saleh’s cousin came at the flat and saw the mutilated body while Haspil was away.
