She was working alone in a Los Angeles furniture store when he stabbed her 46 times. He was found guilty by the jury of killing someone and using a lethal weapon. His state of mind during the attack will now be determined by a sanity phase.

Shawn Laval Smith, 34, has been identified as the murderer. He was found guilty of one count of murder and one count of lying in wait due to exceptional circumstances. The jury also determined that the defendant had used a knife, a lethal and dangerous weapon. When the 24-year-old Kupfer was ambushed at the upscale furniture store where she worked, the district attorney’s office said that the insane guy was looking for a woman by herself.

On January 13, 2022, Smith went into the 300 block of North La Brea Avenue, a furniture store, where Kupfer was working by himself. Before stabbing Kupfer, Smith pretended to be a client. He then left behind a recording device that he used to record the attack, as well as a filet knife that was bent during the ferocious attack and covered in Kupfer’s blood, with Smith’s DNA found on the handle.

He could receive a life sentence without the chance of release. But before anything else, a judge needs to decide if he was sane when the incident happened. Now, on October 2, the trial will enter a non-jury sanity phase. There will be a status conference on Department 126 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center, September 24. Smith might spend the rest of his life behind bars. without being granted parole. Without posting bail, the defendant is being held.
