Florida sheriff is tired of shootings at schools, fake upload mugshots of an 11-year-old on social media
FLORIDA: A sheriff, who had become weary of a recent spate of fictitious threats about school shootings, acted on his warning from last week and on Monday unveiled the mugshot of an 11-year-old who had been charged with threatening to carry out a mass massacre at a middle school.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood of Volusia County declared on Friday that juveniles who pose a threat of violence in schools will be highlighted for “public embarrassment,” adding that the names and arrest images of the perpetrators will be made public. The declaration followed the receipt by local authorities last week of at least 54 tips regarding school threats via the Fortify Florida app, which enables users to alert law enforcement and school administrators to suspicious conduct.
At a press conference on Friday, Chitwood declared, “Since parents, you don’t want to raise your kids, I’m going to start raising them.” “We will post your child’s picture online each time we make an arrest. And to make sure everyone knows what your child is up to, I would perp walk them if I could.”
When he posted a video, mugshot, and full name of an 11-year-old boy being led to a detention cell on social media on Monday, Chitwood justified his choice. The youngster, who is underage and whose identity USA TODAY is withholding, was accused of writing a threat to carry out a mass shooting.
“I can and will release the names and photos of juveniles who are committing these felonies, threatening our students, disrupting our schools, and consuming law enforcement resources,” Chitwood wrote on Facebook. Thousands of people responded to the sheriff’s social media posts, praising Chitwood’s choice and demanding that the boy’s parents be held responsible. Others questioned the morality of exposing kids to the internet and attacked Chitwood.

According to Chitwood, the 11-year-old boy was taken into custody after he threatened to carry out a shooting at either Creekside or Silver Sands Middle School in Port Orange, a city located south of Daytona Beach, Florida.
According to the sheriff’s office, after investigating the boy’s room, detectives allegedly found knives, swords, and other weapons along with a “large amount” of airsoft rifles, pistols, and phony ammo. Additionally, the purported list of targets’ names was found.
The sheriff’s office stated that the youngster told detectives the threat was a joke. He was placed under arrest, brought to the Volusia Family Resource Center, and then sent to the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice for further processing.
