Ohio: In a shocking case of family violence, 43-year-old Ohio grandmother Mia Desiree Harris admitted to shooting her 6-month-old granddaughter in the eye. Harris pleaded guilty to felonious assault in a Butler County court on Tuesday, with additional charges relating to alleged assaults on other family members being dismissed.
Infant Shot in Eye Survives Miraculously
The incident occurred on December 9, when deputies from the Butler County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call at 1:50 a.m. in Liberty Township, approximately 25 miles north of Cincinnati. The baby’s mother made the distressing call, pleading, “My baby’s been shot,” and asking for divine intervention to save her daughter’s life. First responders arrived to find the infant suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, specifically to her eye. The child was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but in a miraculous turn of events, her condition has since improved significantly, according to local reports.
Multiple Family Members Targeted
According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Harris’ violence extended beyond her granddaughter. During the same incident, she allegedly attempted to harm several other family members. The criminal complaint states that Harris fired her handgun multiple times through a locked bedroom door, breaking it down in the process. She also struck another unnamed family member in the face with her fist, causing serious physical harm. Harris fled the scene before deputies arrived but was quickly apprehended. Witnesses identified her as the shooter, and she was taken into custody shortly afterward.
Lack of Remorse and Troubling Statements
During her arrest and subsequent testimony, Harris displayed a troubling lack of remorse. When questioned by deputies, she chillingly stated, “That was not my grandbaby. Sorry, not sorry.” According to Detective Daniel Turner’s testimony, she also claimed her family was attempting to steal her money, and she acted in retaliation, stating, “They crucified her, so she crucified them.”
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones expressed outrage over the incident, labeling it one of the most “disgusting, vile criminal acts” he had ever witnessed. Speaking to local media, Jones remarked, “It wasn’t an accident. It was on purpose. This is one of the worst things I’ve seen — shooting a 6-month-old baby, and what makes it even worse is that this was the baby’s grandmother. She doesn’t seem to have any remorse whatsoever.”
Jones also highlighted the emotional toll the incident had on everyone involved, including the deputies, medical personnel, and doctors who worked to save the child.
Sentencing to Follow in October
Harris is set to be sentenced on October 29 and could face up to 15 years in prison for her actions. The case has sent shockwaves through the community, with many left grappling with the senseless nature of the violence, especially within a family. Sheriff Jones emphasized that this was a purposeful act of violence, making the case all the more tragic and horrific.
The infant, who survived against all odds, continues to recover, while the legal system seeks to deliver justice for the heinous crime.
