During A Wisconsin Hunt, A 12-Year-Old Boy Shoots & Kills A Black Bear Mauling His Father

SIREN: A 12-year-old boy was near their hunting lodge in the dense western Wisconsin woods when he shot and killed an injured black bear that was mauling his father. Ryan Beierman, 43, stated to the Minnesota Star Tribune that on September 6, his son Owen accidentally discharged a shot from the boy’s hunting rifle, pinning him under the 200-pound bruiser. “Owen was a brave man. With bites on his thigh, arm, and forehead, Beierman added, “He shot that bear & slaughtered it on top of me.” In addition, he required sutures to heal a skin flap on his face that had been torn during the assault.

The Bear Was Wounded By Owen’s Shot

Ninety miles northeast of Minneapolis, at a tree stand close to Siren, Wisconsin, he and Owen had earlier observed the bear. The bear was wounded by Owen’s shot, and it fled. Before attempting to locate the bear, the two waited for roughly twenty minutes. They then utilized the tracking dog of the neighbor to try & locate it. “When we overheard the dog yelp & run past us in retreat, we were kind of stuck in a thicket,” Beierman said to the newspaper. At that moment, I entered a semi-clearing. “Look, Owen, there he is,” I exclaimed. About six feet distant, the bear launched itself. According to Beierman, he attempted eight rounds with his pistol, yet none of them found their target.

He recalled, “I was completely flat on my back before I knew it.” It seemed as though I was hitting a brick wall when I began pistol-whipping him. I attempted to strike him between the mouth and the ear with the pistol’s rough edge. Then Beierman’s head was slammed by the bear. He remarked, “I could only see his teeth and claws.” I blocked him by raising my right arm. The first mouthful is still fresh in my memory. Something crunched in my ear. The bear continued to attack. He had no intention of leaving me.

An Ambulance Picked Them Up

“I was fighting for my life, and the bear was battling for it,” Beierman continued. “I’m thrashing around, striking and kicking. At that moment, I noticed a flash coming from Owen’s rifle’s barrel. The bear was then forced off of Beierman. His estimate of the attack’s duration is forty-five seconds. Beierman and Owen were driven to a hospital by a neighbor. An ambulance picked them up and drove them the remainder of the way. His cheek wound would take twenty-three stitches to close. Beierman’s right arm had a cut and seven puncture wounds.
