TikTok is discontinuing its music streaming business
US: Users are also being urged by TikTok Music, which operated in five areas (Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, Singapore, and Mexico), to transfer their playlists by October 28 and receive refunds by November 28.
In a news release, Ole Obermann, the worldwide head of music business development at ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, stated that the company’s objective is to concentrate on collaborating with partner DSPs.
License deal as expired
He noted, “Hundreds of millions of track saves to playlists on partner music streaming services have already been made possible by our Add to Music App feature.”
“To further our goal of furthering TikTok’s role in driving even greater music listening and value on music streaming services, for the benefit of artists, songwriters, and the industry,” he stated, “we will be closing TikTok Music at the end of November.”
When the Add to Music App option was introduced in 2023, users could save songs they found on TikTok to streaming services like Spotify. Because its license deal had expired, UMG (Universal Music Group) had to remove its recordings from the marketplace in January. But eventually, the label and the app came to a new deal that let the music play again.
