Los Angeles: A bus hijacking in Los Angeles early Wednesday morning turned into a tense, slow-motion police chase through city streets, ending in tragedy with one passenger dead and the alleged gunman taken into custody.

Hijacking Leads to Chaotic Police Chase

The incident began around 1:00 am when police received reports of gunfire aboard a city bus. The armed suspect had reportedly ordered the driver to divert from the bus’s regular route, causing chaos as passengers scrambled to escape.

As the hijacked bus continued through darkened streets, it was followed closely by several police vehicles. Footage from the scene captured bystanders riding alongside the bus—one on a bike and another on a skateboard—documenting the bizarre and dangerous situation.  The bus, displaying the word “Emergency,” rolled slowly for over an hour as officers attempted to resolve the hijacking peacefully. Despite deploying spike strips that punctured the bus’s tires, the chase dragged on, leaving the bus trailing smoke from its damaged wheels. Eventually, the police SWAT team surrounded the vehicle and ordered everyone off the bus through a loudspeaker, instructing the driver and any remaining passengers to exit with their hands up.

SWAT Team Intervention and Fatality

After the SWAT team surrounded the bus, officers used flashbangs to disorient the suspect and stormed the vehicle with shields drawn. The driver was seen sitting with his hands raised, complying with the police’s orders. However, by the time the police had secured the bus, the damage had been done. A passenger, who had been shot during the initial stages of the hijacking, was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Authorities have not yet released the name of the victim or any details regarding their connection to the gunman. The suspect was apprehended at the scene, but police have yet to release information regarding the motive behind the hijacking or how the situation escalated into such deadly violence.

Praise for the Bus Driver’s Calm Response

Despite the tragic outcome, police and officials praised the bus driver for his composed reaction during the harrowing ordeal. Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson Donald Graham highlighted the driver’s calmness, noting that he had pressed a panic button to alert authorities as soon as the hijacking began. The driver then operated the bus as safely as possible while officers trailed behind, working to de-escalate the situation.

“This operator continued to operate the bus as safely as he could under the circumstances,” Graham said. “We’re thankful for his composure.” Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn called the hijacking “a nightmare” and thanked the driver for his bravery during the incident. She also raised concerns about public safety on the city’s transportation network, saying, “We need ways to prevent people from bringing weapons onto our Metro buses and trains.”

Concerns About Safety on Public Transportation

The hijacking is the latest in a string of violent incidents affecting Los Angeles’ public transportation system. Recent months have seen an uptick in stabbings and shootings, sparking concerns about the safety of passengers, many of whom are from marginalized communities. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has vowed to improve the city’s transit infrastructure in preparation for the 2028 Olympics, to create a “car-free Games.” However, incidents like this highlight the urgent need for increased security measures on the network.
