Penelope Stanley, a 79-year-old Portland woman who had been missing since Monday night, has been found safe in the Mount Hood National Forest, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO). Authorities had earlier sought public assistance in locating her after she disappeared from Milwaukie. Stanley, who requires critical medication, was located after a concerned individual spotted her car and notified authorities.
Discovery in Mount Hood National Forest
Stanley’s car was discovered in Mount Hood National Forest when a passerby stumbled upon it and reported the sighting to the authorities upon returning to town. Clackamas County officers quickly responded to the tip and initiated a search in the area. They found Stanley near her vehicle, alive and in good condition. Officers immediately provided care while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.
Health Concerns and Delusional Beliefs
According to the WCSO, Stanley requires critical medication and may have been experiencing delusional beliefs at the time of her disappearance. She was last seen on Monday at 6:16 p.m. at Providence Milwaukie, a medical facility in Milwaukie, Oregon. The last known location of her phone was tracked to Estacada, a town approximately two hours away from her last sighting. Authorities believed Stanley was driving a dark blue 2019 Mazda CX-5 with Oregon license plate 784 MEP, which helped in identifying her vehicle in the forest. Thanks to the keen observation of a passerby, law enforcement was able to locate her and ensure her well-being.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office had earlier requested the public’s help in finding Stanley, knowing the critical importance of her medications and the possibility that she was acting on delusional beliefs. Her safe recovery was made possible by the collaborative efforts of the public and law enforcement agencies.
Stanley’s family and the authorities expressed their gratitude to everyone involved in the search and to the person who found her vehicle and reported it, leading to her rescue. She is now being cared for, and further medical attention is being provided to ensure her full recovery.
