Minor in Johnston police custody after threat reported at middle school

Johnston Middle School in Iowa was briefly placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon after a student reported seeing a weapon in an upstairs restroom at 2:48 p.m. The school immediately secured the premises, keeping students and staff in their current locations until the all-clear was given at 3:08 p.m.

The Johnston Police Department conducted a thorough search but found no weapon. One individual was taken into custody. The district canceled all evening activities due to the ongoing investigation.

Friday classes will resume normally, with increased police presence. Superintendent Dr. Nikki Roorda assured families that student safety remains the top priority.

“We recognize the lockdown’s potential impact on students and have extra counseling staff available tomorrow for support,” Roorda said. “Please reach out to your student’s school counselor with any concerns.”

The district praised students and staff for speaking up and sharing information, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining a secure learning environment.
