A former state senator, who was a victim of the “ghost candidate” scheme that influenced a Miami-area legislative race, spoke out on Tuesday after the scheme’s mastermind was found guilty.

Following more than two weeks of trial, jurors convicted former Republican State Senator Frank Artiles on Monday of excessive campaign contributions, conspiring to make illegal contributions, and falsifying a candidate oath form. However, he was acquitted of charges related to falsifying a voter registration form. Authorities allege Artiles recruited “ghost candidate” Alex Rodriguez to run as a third-party candidate, aiming to siphon votes from incumbent Democrat Jose Javier Rodriguez in the 2020 District 37 race. Alex Rodriguez garnered over 6,000 votes, with Republican candidate Ileana Garcia winning the race by a narrow margin of 32 votes.

Less than 24 hours after the verdict, Jose Javier Rodriguez expressed his gratitude to NBC6, commending the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s office for their dedication and the strong case they presented.
