Sex trafficking trial for Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs set to begin in May
A trial date has been set for May 5 in a sex trafficking case in which US entertainment tycoon Sean “Diddy” Combs is accused of sexually abusing and coercing women over years. Members of the hip-hop icon’s family attended the hearing in Manhattan federal court on Thursday, where Combs’ lawyers asked the judge to exclude a video of him assaulting a former girlfriend in 2016 from the trial, claiming it was leaked by the government and could be prejudicial.
According to Assistant US Attorney Emily Johnson, those assertions were “baseless and simply a means to try to exclude a damning piece of evidence”. “Not a single one of those alleged leaks are from members of the prosecution team,” Johnson made clear.
The 54-year-old rapper has pleaded not guilty to racketeering and sexual assault charges, alleging that he utilized his network of colleagues and employees to traffic sex workers over state lines and silence victims through blackmail and physical abuse. Combs flashed kisses to his family members in court on Thursday, when he sat next to his lawyer, Anthony Ricco, clad in prison uniform. Arun Subramanian, a federal court judge, directed defense lawyer Marc Agnifilo to draft a proposed order urging all parties to follow guidelines on publicly exposing information that could prejudice the trial.
