Shawnee Mission NW football player died from heat stroke complications, autopsy says

Ovet Gomez Regalado, a 15-year-old student from Shawnee Mission Northwest, tragically died in August due to complications from heat stroke following his collapse during football practice, according to an autopsy.

On August 14, emergency responders were called to the school at 5:15 p.m., arriving at 5:32 p.m., and immediately transported the sophomore to a nearby hospital. Gomez Regalado passed away two days later on August 16.

The Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted the autopsy, which revealed that Gomez Regalado experienced a hyperthermic event—an extreme rise in body temperature—after completing a 15-minute exercise. Staff noticed he was pale, sweating excessively, and asking for water before collapsing.

At the time of practice, the temperature was 92 degrees, with humidity over 70% and a heat index exceeding 112 degrees. A heat advisory had been issued earlier that day. Despite efforts to cool him with ice bags, Gomez Regalado’s body temperature was recorded at 104.6 degrees, confirming heat stroke, as core temperatures above 104 degrees are considered dangerous.
