Georgia: The trial of Leilani Simon, a 24-year-old mother accused of killing her 20-month-old son, Quinton Simon, and disposing of his body in a dumpster, began on Monday. Prosecutors argued that in the days leading up to Quinton’s death, Simon was experiencing relationship issues, using narcotic drugs, and telling authorities conflicting and bizarre stories after her son’s disappearance. On the night of Quinton’s death in October 2022, Simon claimed she stopped at a remote dumpster to throw away “spoiled shrimp pasta.” However, prosecutors allege that she was disposing of her son’s body, which was later found in pieces in a nearby landfill.
The Charges: Murder, Aggravated Assault, and More
Leilani Simon faces 19 criminal charges, including malice murder, felony murder, and concealing the death of her son. According to the indictment, Simon intentionally killed Quinton using an unknown object that caused serious bodily injury. The felony murder charges are tied to accusations that Simon caused her son excessive physical pain before his death.
Special Assistant District Attorney Tim Dean, in his opening statement, described how Simon misled authorities about her actions. He highlighted a police interview in which Simon claimed to have thrown out “stinky shrimp pasta,” a statement prosecutors say was an attempt to conceal the truth about her son’s murder.
Prosecutors also played a tape from Simon’s October 12, 2022, interview with detectives. In the recording, Simon explains that her car smelled like spoiled food, prompting her to discard what she claimed was old shrimp pasta at the Azalea Mobile Home Plaza dumpster. “It’s just old food,” she said. Prosecutors, however, argue that Simon was disposing of Quinton’s remains under the guise of throwing out trash.
Disposing of Her Son Like “Trash”
According to prosecutors, Simon murdered her son on the night of October 4, 2022, and then drove his body to a nearby dumpster in the early hours of the following morning. “She throws Quinton’s body away like a piece of trash at 1:17 in the morning,” Dean told the court. “She violated the most sacred trust of a parent most horribly.” In addition to the murder charge, Simon faces allegations of lying to both local and federal authorities. She initially claimed that she had left home on the night of October 4 to meet a drug dealer to pay off a debt. Later, she falsely stated that she left home early on October 5 to obtain Orajel for her son from a friend. Prosecutors say Simon repeated these false stories in multiple interviews with investigators over the following weeks.
Human Remains Discovered
On November 18, 2022, investigators discovered human remains in a landfill, which were later confirmed by the FBI to belong to Quinton Simon. The discovery came after Simon had admitted to police that she had gone to the Azalea Mobile Home Plaza on the morning of October 5 but claimed not to remember what she had done there.
Simon was arrested on November 21, 2022, following a series of contradictory statements and mounting evidence linking her to her son’s death. The trial continues as the prosecution seeks to hold her accountable for what they call a “cruel and tragic act.”
