Kids ages 2, 8 and 9 hurt in crash that killed 94-year-old on Turnpike in Broward

The nine victims of a crash on Florida’s Turnpike that killed a grandmother on her 94th birthday and hospitalized three children were all from Louisiana, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. At roughly 2:30 p.m., the van carrying the nine occupants rear-ended a fuel tanker truck for “undetermined reasons.” According to a Florida Highway Patrol report filed on Wednesday, the incident occurred Tuesday in the Turnpike’s southbound lanes near Griffin Road. According to the FHP, the van skidded to a stop and some occupants were thrown.

Plantation Fire Authorities stated that no one in the van was wearing a seatbelt. An FHP investigation stated that impairment was not a factor in the crash. The casualties riding in the passenger van were:

  • A 42-year-old man was driving.
  • A 94-year-old woman who was killed
  • A 60-year-old woman
  • A 38-year-old woman
  • A 30-year-old woman
  • A 27-year-old man
  • A 9-year-old girl
  • An 8-year-old girl
  • A 2-year-old boy

The 94-year-old woman was pronounced deceased on the spot. Family members recognized her as Earnestine Morris of Baton Rouge on Wednesday. Morris left behind six children and 18 grandchildren, according to family relatives. The survivors were in stable condition as of Tuesday.

The survivors were in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon, however FHP did not release any other details regarding their potential injuries. Aerial footage from Chopper 6 revealed a white van with serious front end damage. A yellow sheet covered what seemed to be a body next to the van. On Tuesday, all southbound lanes in the area were closed due to a crash, and traffic was completely stopped at one point.
