Teen Kayaker Rescued After Spending Night at Sea Off Waikiki
A 17-year-old Kamehameha student athlete survived a harrowing night at sea after being reported missing during a kayaking practice on Wednesday evening. The teen had been kayaking with his team, who were paddling from the Ala Wai Channel to Diamond Head and back when they encountered rough conditions. When the team turned back, they realized the teen was missing and immediately alerted first responders.
The Honolulu Fire Department initiated a shoreline search at around 6:35 p.m., which was later expanded to cover a four-mile stretch offshore, from Diamond Head to Nanakuli. After a tense night of searching, a U.S. Coast Guard aircraft located the teen at around 4:20 a.m. on Thursday, approximately one mile offshore near the Waikiki Natatorium.
Noland Keaulana, an off-duty lifeguard who had been searching since the teen went missing, was alerted by the Coast Guard and spotted the teen clinging to his kayak. Keaulana rescued the teen, bringing him safely aboard his boat and transporting him back to the Ala Wai Boat Harbor.
The teen’s safe return brought relief to the community after a night of uncertainty.
