Joseph Malinowski, 54, who gained online notoriety for his daring decisions to ride out hurricanes Helene and Milton on his 20-foot sailboat, was arrested Friday by Tampa police. Malinowski, famously known as “Lieutenant Dan,” faces multiple charges, including two outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court and a misdemeanor trespassing charge.

According to a statement from Tampa police, officers had warned Malinowski on Thursday after he was found at Bayshore Linear Park and Dock. They cited concerns over his vessel’s lack of proper sanitation equipment. Police stated that Malinowski’s sailboat, which was unregistered, lacked an accessible marine sanitation device, and he could not provide proof of proper waste disposal. This failure to comply with regulations raised health concerns, and he was told to vacate the area.

However, when officers returned the following morning, Malinowski was still at the park. As a result, he was arrested and his sailboat was impounded. Malinowski was transported to Hillsborough County Jail, where he is being held on the outstanding charges.

Malinowski became a viral figure due to his risky decisions to stay aboard his sailboat during dangerous weather events, attracting both admiration and concern from the online community. His arrest, however, brings attention to the legal troubles and health hazards tied to his unconventional lifestyle.
