Authorities have confirmed that the body of a 20-year-old man, which was found inside a residence in Michigan City, has been identified as that of an individual who had been reported missing since November. This discovery has raised concerns in the community as they reflect on the circumstances surrounding the man’s disappearance.
Damarius Kelly was found shortly before noon on Wednesday in the 400 block of Holiday Street, located just off Michigan Boulevard on the northern side of the city. This area is known for its residential neighborhoods, and the discovery has drawn attention from local authorities and community members alike.
Law enforcement officials, along with the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office, have chosen not to disclose the cause or manner of death at this time. They have decided to wait for the results of an autopsy before providing any additional information. This cautious approach aims to ensure that all details are accurately determined and communicated to the public.
According to police reports, Damarius Kelly was last seen on November 26. It was noted that, prior to his disappearance, he had been staying at various locations, suggesting that he may have been experiencing some instability in his living situation. This pattern has raised concerns among investigators and community members regarding the circumstances leading up to his vanishing.
Investigators have been informed by family members that Damarius Kelly was supposed to receive a wire transfer of $200; however, he never collected the funds. Additionally, he did not attend a Thanksgiving dinner with his family, which was noted as highly unusual behavior for him. This absence from a family gathering has raised concerns among his loved ones and contributed to the growing worry surrounding his disappearance, according to police reports.
Authorities have not offered any information regarding the length of time Damarius Kelly had been deceased nor have they confirmed whether the house where his body was discovered was unoccupied. This lack of details leaves many questions unanswered as investigators continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding his death.
“I can’t give out any details on the condition of the deceased,” said Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek.
Mark Huffman, the Chief Deputy Coroner of LaPorte County, stated that an autopsy has been scheduled for Friday afternoon in Lafayette. This procedure is expected to provide further insights into the circumstances of Damarius Kelly’s death.
He expressed uncertainty regarding the amount of time it would take for the forensic examination to establish the cause of Damarius Kelly’s death.
“Sometimes it’s a day or two. Sometimes it’s a week. It depends on how in depth they get with the case and how easy the case is for them to find out,” said Huffman.
There is a site on Facebook entitled – Find Damarius Kelly- missing from Michigan City, Indiana.
