Broward County Public Schools Adjusts Calendar After Hurricane-Related Closures

Broward County Public Schools has announced revisions to its 2024-25 academic calendar due to closures caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The district was forced to close schools for several days, prompting the need for adjustments to ensure that students make up for the lost instructional time. The most significant change is the transformation of previously scheduled employee planning days into regular school days for students. Key Calendar Modifications

One of the major changes involves the first week of January 2025. Initially, January 6 was designated as an employee planning day, where only staff would report to work. However, it has now been switched to a regular school day for students to make up for the time lost during the hurricane closures. Additionally, the first semester, which was originally scheduled to end earlier, will now conclude on January 9, 2025, giving students and teachers more time to complete the required coursework for the term.

Another significant adjustment is the change to January 10, 2025, which was previously planned as a regular instructional day. It has now been designated as an employee planning day, allowing teachers and staff to develop professionally and prepare for the second semester.

Furthermore, the district has added three “severe weather days” to the calendar as a proactive measure in case of future weather-related disruptions. These days are November 25 and 26, 2024, and March 31, 2025. These dates can be used to make up for any additional instructional days that might be lost due to unforeseen circumstances like severe weather conditions.

Minimal Impact on Exams

One key aspect of the calendar revisions is that the exam schedules for the semester remain unaffected. While the end of the first semester has been pushed back slightly, the district has ensured that all scheduled exams will proceed as planned.
