Search for Missing Man Ends in Heartbreaking Discovery

The last known contact with Johnson occurred at around 11:30 a.m. that Saturday when he made a phone call. After that, there was no further communication. Police speculated that Johnson might have been on foot in the densely wooded areas surrounding his home, prompting a widespread search effort with the assistance of New York State Forest Rangers. Despite the challenging conditions, the search team pressed on, and on Wednesday, October 16, Johnson’s body was discovered, about 6 to 7 miles from his home. His dog was still by his side, demonstrating unwavering loyalty even in the face of tragedy.

Dog’s Loyalty Offers Comfort Amid Sadness

Sheriff Carpinelli of the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office spoke with PEOPLE about the discovery, expressing his thoughts on the touching scene. “The dog had been with him the entire time,” Carpinelli said. The sheriff added that Johnson’s dog never left his side throughout the ordeal, staying with him for several days in the wilderness. “The loyalty the dog showed Cody is a testament to their bond. His companion stayed with him through the cold nights and long days.” The strong bond between Johnson and his dog was further highlighted when the dog initially refused to leave Johnson’s side even after authorities arrived. However, the dog is now being cared for by a family friend, a gesture that brings some solace to Johnson’s loved ones.

Hypothermia Confirmed as Cause of Death

An autopsy confirmed that Johnson died from hypothermia, and his death has been ruled accidental, according to Lewis County District Attorney and Coroner Jeffery G. Tompkins. The unforgiving weather conditions and exposure to the elements ultimately claimed Johnson’s life, but the presence of his dog throughout the ordeal adds a bittersweet note to the tragic story. Though Johnson’s life was tragically cut short, his dog’s steadfast presence offers a sense of comfort to those mourning his loss, knowing that he was not alone during his final moments.
